"I can't see the glass door even if it is in front of me, a problem when I enter shopping centres. I also had difficulties judging steps on stairs and escalators. When she awoke the next morning, the pain at her temple was gone. An excited Astrid realised she could see straight lines and colour! My family were so happy for me," said Astrid, "we had a mini-celebration right away in Singapore."

Seeing life in a new light

For eight long years, Mdm Astrid, 64, endured the problems her right eye was giving her.

When the problem first occurred, she went as far as Boston to seek treatment. Diagnosed as Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), an irreversible visual loss, the doctors told her that there was no cure for her eye condition.

The strong-willed Astrid decided to cast the problem aside and continued with her life, working as a chemist.

That was until 2006 when she started experiencing pain on her temple and intense headaches. Her vision was so badly affected that she can no longer even see straight lines.

"My world became slanted, wavy and irregular. Even straight lines appear wavy to me." said Astrid. "I can't see the glass door even if it is in front of me, a problem when I enter shopping centres. I also had difficulties judging steps on stairs and escalators." For that, Astrid found herself getting into accidents, falling down more and more often, not good for a woman her age.

Her concerned brother-in-law, Mr Ganda, got to know about Dr Lee Jong Jian, consultant ophthalmologist, in July 2006 through his stepson, Dr Iwan, an eye doctor himself undergoing training in Singapore.

Upon examining Mdm Astrid, Dr Lee found that there is hope for cure for Astrid's eye problem, which he diagnosed as vitreo-macular traction syndrome. "To put in simple terms," explained Dr Lee, "Astrid's problem of vision distorsion is due to the traction of the eye jelly and membrane formation overlying the macula, responsible for sharp vision. The nerve layer is therefore distorted, resulting in slanting and wavy images. With new advancement in skills and imaging, we can now assess the severity and plan
