CEI Surgeons
William J. Faulkner, M.D., has been a cornea specialist at the Cincinnati Eye Institute since 1980. He is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and University of Louisville School of Medicine. Postgraduate training included internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (Stanford), residency at the University of Oklahoma, and fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (Harvard, Cornea and External Disease). 
Dr. Faulkner's practice focuses on medical and surgical treatments of the anterior segment of the eye. He performs corneal transplant surgery, small incision, sutureless, cataract surgery, and has used the new multifocal intraocular lens. Long interested in refractive surgery, he first performed radial keratotomy in 1984, had it himself in 1987, and currently performs LASIK. He does the PRELEX procedure for extreme refractive errors and has inserted the new implantable contact lens under investigational protocol. 
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, serves on the Board of Directors of Cincinnati Eye Bank, is a volunteer faculty member for the Bethesda Hospital Family Practice Residency Program, and is listed in the Guide to America's top Ophthalmologists, 2002-2003. 
Dr. Faulkner is married with a son and daughter. He has served on the board of Glendale Youth Sports and coached baseball and soccer. He has led Youth Group and is an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Glendale.
Edward J. Holland, M.D
Edward J. Holland, M.D. is Director of Cornea and External Disease at Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI) and Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at University of Cincinnati. He received his Medical Degree from Loyola- Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois and trained in Ophthalmology at University of Minnesota. Dr. Holland completed a Fellowship in cornea and external disease at University of Iowa, then completed a second Fellowship in ocular immunology at National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
 
Dr. Holland serves as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for Eye Bank Association of America and President of the Cornea Society (formerly the Castroviejo Cornea Society). He is Director of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Skills Transfer Courses, and as such, is responsible for programs to train Ophthalmologists in refractive and other new surgical techniques across the United States. 
Dr. Holland has a national and international reputation for his knowledge and expertise in the field of cornea and external disease. He is frequently invited to lecture both nationally and internationally. Dr. Holland is the author of over 100 articles in peer review journals and has edited Cornea, the most widely read textbook on corneal disease and surgery. He has co-edited the recently published textbook, Ocular Surface Disease: Medical and Surgical Management.
Donald S. Jacobs, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Donald S. Jacobs, M.D., F.A.C.S. specializes in laser vision correction and cataract implant surgery. He practices at the Mt. Auburn/Christ Hospital office, as well, as at Cincinnati Eye Institute’s (CEI) Montgomery location. 
Dr. Jacobs is a native Cincinnatian. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and his Medical Degree from Johns Hopkins. After an Internship in Internal Medicine at University of Cincinnati, Dr. Jacobs completed his Residency at University of Illinois Eye Center in Chicago. Before returning to Cincinnati, he also served two years at the U.S. Naval Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina.
 Dr. Jacobs’ principal interest is in excimer laser treatment for vision correction and is one of the specialists staffing CEI’s Laser Vision Center. Dr. Jacobs’ interest in refractive surgery began in 1981, and he subsequently became an accomplished radial keratotomy surgeon. In 1989, he became interested in the potentials of the excimer laser in the correction of nearsightedness. Dr. Jacobs has traveled to Berlin, London, Toronto and extensively in the U.S. to learn about the latest PRK and LASIK laser techniques from the pioneers in the field.
Dr. Jacobs has extensive experience in cataract surgery. In 1976, he was the first U.S. military Ophthalmologist to perform intraocular lens implants. He has been among the first in Cincinnati to utilize the techniques of phacoemulsification, foldable silicone lenses, clear cornea no-stitch incisions and topical eyedrop anesthesia.
 
Dr. Jacobs is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is on the active staff at Christ and Deaconess Hospitals. His affiliations include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. 
Adam H. Kaufman, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Adam H. Kaufman, M.D., F.A.C.S. is one of the tri-state’s leading corneal and anterior segment surgeons. He is Chief of Corneal and Refractive Surgery Service and Chief of the Uveitis Service at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is Director of the LASIK program at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is Director of Corneal and Anterior Segment Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Kaufman sees patients at University Medical Arts Building and the Montgomery office of Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI). 
Dr. Kaufman has been repeatedly selected by the publication Best Doctors in America, and in Cincinnati Magazine's Top Doctor issue. Dr. Kaufman is a Harvard Fellowship-trained corneal specialist with broad surgical expertise that includes corneal transplants, LASIK, and cataract surgery. Dr. Kaufman’s surgical expertise also includes multiple anterior segment procedures such as pterygium surgery, conjunctival surgery, excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy, and post-traumatic anterior segment reconstruction surgery. Dr. Kaufman is also an authority in pediatric corneal transplants and pediatric intraocular lens implantation. Dr. Kaufman is a Harvard Fellowship-trained uveitis specialist, and is the Tristate’s only uveitis specialist. 
Dr. Kaufman has many years experience with LASIK Laser Vision Correction. He served as a co-investiator on the VISX excimer laser while he was a Corneal Fellow in 1992 and 1993. By being one of the first surgeons to perform laser vision correction in Cincinnati following FDA approval, Dr. Kaufman has been able to actively teach laser vision correction techniques to other surgeons. He has directed three symposia on Laser Vision Correction for the region's Ophthalmologists. He has trained four refractive surgery Fellows and has twice been awarded the Teaching Award of the Department of Ophthalmology at University of Cincinnati.
 Dr. Kaufman received his Medical Degree from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Following a one-year Internship in Internal Medicine at the New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Kaufman received his Ophthalmology training at the Columbia, Presbyterian Medical Center at Columbia University. After his Ophthalmology Residency, Dr. Kaufman completed subspecialty Fellowship training at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School.
 
Dr. Kaufman is an expert in the healing process after laser vision correction. Dr. Kaufman maintains an active research program to study corneal wound healing, and he has been involved in Excimer laser research since 1991. He has also served as a principal co-investigator on several research studies to evaluate new ophthalmic medications. He has published articles and book chapters, and he regularly presents his work at the annual meetings of the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Kaufman has received a Career Development Award from Research to Prevent Blindness.
